Burma Chindits

The woodcarving of Myanmar is justly famous and is a highly respected craft.  There are few woodcarvers in the world that can match these Myanmar artists. Carvings adorn many important buildings including, monasteries, pagodas, palaces, royal barges and carriages.
Here at Burma Chindits we are working together with these talented craftsmen to be an outlet for their beautiful work.  We have spent years exploring the limits of the reclaimed timbers, developing designs and learning from each other.  The products below are a result of this work, much of which is produced in small homes which also serve as workshops.

Our carvings will vary due to the nature of the wood and each individual carver's interpretation of our designs. Most reclaimed timber contains imperfections of some nature. At Burma Chindits we view these variations as beauty which makes our product truly unique. We divide our carvings into two categories an antique finish containing more natural ageing than our natural finish which is relatively free of natural defects. Our photos are representative of our products but due to the nature of the material and the handmade
process, there will be variations in colour, texture and slight size variations. Therefore you receive truly original products.

The Chindits were an Allied Special Force formed and lead by General Orde Wingate.  They fought deep behind enemy lines in World War II (1943-44) in Northern Burma against the Japanese.  They were successful in their operation in recapturing Burma from the Japanese. Chindits is a corruption of the Burmese word Chinthe, the Burmese word for the mythical lion guardians of Burmese pagodas.
